Cerebrolysin dosage and reconstitution
A pig-brain extract given in daily courses after a stroke or head injury. Decades of use abroad, mixed trials, not a nootropic.
Clinics give it in courses, and the benefit is meant to outlast the course, so there is nothing to gain from running it straight through. Repeat when the benefit fades, a few times a year at most.
Staying safe
Things people sometimes notice
- Dizziness or a warm flush during and just after a dose, almost always from giving it too fast
- Feeling wired or a little foggy on higher doses, which settles with a slower drip or a smaller dose
- Soreness at an intramuscular site, since 5 mL is a large injection
Stop and get help if (trouble breathing or swelling: call 911)
- Rash, hives, swelling or trouble breathing, because it is an animal protein extract
- Any seizure or twitching, since it can lower the seizure threshold
- Chest tightness, racing heart or feeling faint during an IV drip; stop the drip, do not slow it
Talk to your doctor first, especially if
- You have a pork allergy, because it is made from pig brain
- You have epilepsy or any seizure history, since the manufacturer flags a lowered seizure threshold
- You have significant kidney disease, because each course is a sizable amino-acid and nitrogen load
- You are using it for a real stroke, head injury or dementia, where the course needs to sit inside a rehab plan the treating doctor knows about
Mixing it
Cerebrolysin comes as a pre-made liquid in sealed ampoules, not a powder you reconstitute. It is given by intramuscular injection (smaller amounts) or as an IV infusion (larger amounts). There is no mixing math, but IV use in particular belongs in a clinical setting.
Use it as the ready-made liquid; there is no powder to reconstitute.
Smaller IM doses can be given as a single injection.
Larger doses are diluted and given as a slow IV infusion, which is a clinical procedure.
Keep ampoules at room temperature away from light, and check the liquid is clear.
Stick to a defined short course rather than open-ended daily use.
